Acquisition Of Alaska
The United States purchases Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million (two cents per acre).
This allowed an economic gain for the United States because of the many natural resources that are found in Alaska. -
America and Cuba
The United States and Cuba were trading between each other while they were trying to gain there independence from Spain. The U.S. decided to help them out because there were Americans and they had businesses in Cuba. This did not mean they were on good terms because before the war started the USS Maine was blown up and many believe that Cuba did it. The U.S. also said they were not going to acquire Cuba with the Teller Amendment but then went and did it anyways with the Platt Amendment. -
USS Maine
The USS Maine was an American ship that was sank in the Havana Harbor in Cuba. It was sent to Cuba to pick up Americans that were in trouble during the rebellion of Cuba. Nobody knows how the ship was blown up but it toke the lives of many men, women, and children. -
Teller Amendment
The Teller Amendment was passed on April 20, 1898. It said that the United States would not have a military presence in Cuba and that they would not acquire Cuba. -
The Spanish-American War
War between America and Spain which lasted 8 months. War was declared on April 25, 1898 and was over on December 10, 1898 with the treaty of Paris.
This was a Political gain because the Treaty Of Paris gave The United States control over Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. -
Acquisition Of Hawaii
The United States annexed Hawaii because of there great harbor and because they feared other countries would acquire it.
This allowed the United States to have an economic gain because they could get there sugar from Hawaii. -
America and The Philippines
After the Spanish-American War, The United States gained control of the Philippines after buying it from Spain for $20 million. This did not make the Philippines very happy so they decided to start a war. The Philippine-American war lasted 3 years and also killed many people. American forces also imprisoned or killed civilians to stop them from revolting.
This was a Cultural gain because Americans thought the Philippines were not able to self govern themselves. -
America and China
After all these wars that The United States have been in they are showing that they are a dominant power. Everybody wanted to be financially powerful in china. So this allowed the United States to introduce the Open Door Policy which allowed all the countries to have equal access to China. This allowed them to come into China and be able to trade and have businesses there. This made China grow into a powerful empire because of all the trading that was being done with them. -
Platt Amendment
The Platt Amendment was passed on March 2, 1901. This withdrew American troops from Cuba and gave the US the right to intervene in Cuba to protect "life, property, and individual liberties". -
Roosevelt Corollary
TR announced the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine, Declaring that the US would be the policemen of the Caribbean/ Central America.
