    In 1953 the first facemask was used. Cleveland Brown quarterback, Otto Graham, suffered a jaw injury in the course of play. To continue in the game Graham needed something to protect his jaw. At halftime, a clear, plastic, protective cover was attached to the helmet so he could continue. From then on, facemasks starting being used and were soon required in the NFL. Now these designs are outlawed for increased protection.

    During October 1991 a high school football player is tackled on the last play of the first half. His head hits the ground hard. During halftime, he tells a teammate he has a headache, but goes back into the game. Taking routine blows starting in the third quarter, he collapses on the field and is taken to the hospital in a coma. He died four days later. Autopsy reveals the brain to be swollen and with evidence of cerebrovascular congestion and features of temporal lobe herniation.

    Junior Seau committed suicide on May 2, 2012 by shooting himself in the chest. He did mot leave a suicide note, but it is shown that brain injuries may have played a role in Seau’s death. After the autopsy it is revealed he had CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), a very common disease in ex-football players caused my suffering multiple hits to the head.

They accused the NFL of “deliberately and fraudulently concealed the risk of brain injury from players while marketing the ferocity and brutality of the game.” They also claim that the hits to the head caused them to sustain more major injuries and life-threatening diseases such as CTE, second impact syndrome, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

The plaintiffs include Kevin Turner, Jim McMahon, and the families of Dave Duerson and Ray Easterling and many, many others. Most of these cases have relatively the same issue with the NFL. They claim it concealed the seriousness of some of the things that are happening.
