The Great Depression Begins
September 3: The stock market reaches its peak, but there are signs that the economy is slowing.
October 24: The stock market begins to crash.
October 29: The stock market plunges. This day will became known as "Black Tuesday." -
Banks begin to fail
June 17: The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act is passed. Many economists say this act contributed to the Great Depression. -
Starting the Dust Bowl
The Depression begins to get worse and February food riots begin to break out in parts of the United States. Severe drought hits the Midwestern and Southern Plains. As the crops die, the “black blizzards” begin. Dust from the over-plowed and over-grazed land begins to blow. -
Unemployment and Storms
1932: Unemployment Rises to 23.6 percent and over 10,000 banks have failed since 1929.
July 28: The Bonus Army of U.S. veterans march on Washington and demand their bonus pay. They are removed by the U.S. Army by force.
The number of dust storms is increasing. Fourteen are reported this year. -

March 4 1933-US is in a great depression, Roosevelt starts to rebuild the economy and stop the storms.

The Civilian Conservation Corps opens the first soil erosion control camp June 18 1933
FSRC Creation September 1933- The FSRC helped distribute agricultural commodities to the needy.

February: Huey Long, Governor of Louisiana, establishes the "Share Our Wealth" movement.
June 6: The SEC is established to regulate the stock market.
June 7: The Corporate Bankruptcy Act becomes law.
Jun 28: The Federal Housing Administration is established by the passing of the National Housing Act. -
The ERA Act and The Creation of WPA
FDR approves the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act, which gives $525 million to people effected by drought, and leads to the Works Progress Administration which, over the course of its existence employs 8,500,000 people. -
The Shelterbelt Project Begins
FDR’s Shelterbelt Project begins. The project is planned as a massive tree planting over an 100-mile wide zone from Canada to northern Texas. The projects purpose was to try and stop dust storms from causing as much damage. Trees,like red cedar and green ash, are planted along fence rows,and farmers and workers from the Civilian Conservation Corps are paid to plant them. -
1938
Unemployment Rises to 19 percent, The Frazier-Lemke Farm Bankruptcy Act is approved. This act stops banks from taking farmer's land away in a time of distress. -
Great Depression Ends
In the fall,it rains multiple times and the drought and depression come to an end with WWll about to start. The Great Plains become rich with wheat once again.
