Global Population Digital Timeline

  • World's First Vaccination

In 1796, Dr. Edward Jenner performed the First Vaccination that he invented against smallpox in an eight year old boy called James Phipps. This was the start of vaccines because from this point on doctors partially understood the concept of vaccines and started to invent vaccines to prevent other diseases. This fact contributed to increase world population because the number of deaths associated with diseases decreased.

  • 1 Billion People Milestone!

According to Worldometers Website, in 1804 the world population achieved a milestone of 1,000,000,000 people! This milestone is important to help us understand that from this point on, the world's population furiously increased in a rapid rate. Worldometers.info. "Current World Population." • The Discovery of Germs :From 1860 to 1864, Louis Pasteur conducted the first official experiments regarding to the relation of germs and diseases and suggested a method to kill them. These experiments were fundamental in the area of medicine

Although Pasteur's theory wasn't accepted by the medical society of the time it led to further researches deep into the relation between germs and diseases. These researches made the population aware of basic hygienic habits to prevent diseases like washing hands which decreased the number of people dying because of diseases related to bad hygiene, like cholera.
  • The Invention of the Tractor: In 1890, John Froelich invented the first gas powered tractor in Clayton County, Iowa in USA.

The first tractor wasn't efficient but it's invention was the point of departure to the improvement of the tractor taking it to the parameters we see today. The tractor contributed to the green revolution because it took farming from a small and rudimentary practice for self sustenance to an international comercial business practice. This also contributed to the increase world population because it decreased hunger and deaths associated with hunger.

  • The Discovery of Penicillin

In 1920, Scientist Alexander Fleming discovered in his laboratory a substance that could kill some bacteria. This was the start of the first antibiotic afterwards called ''Penicillin''. From this point on child mortality caused by bacteria drastically decreased. This fact contributed to the increase of world population because children stopped dying while the adults continued to reproduce in the rate they did before which led to the increase in population.

  • 2 Billion People Milestone!

According to the Worldometers Website, in 1927 the world population achieved a milestone of 2,000,000,000 people! The world's population took around 1600 years to achieve the milestone of 1 billion people and 123 years later it doubled, mainly because of the industrial, agricultural and medical growth. • Recombinant DNA Created

In 1973, the first human-made genetic modification was created by a student of Stanford University Medical School with his professor Herbert Boyer and a group of biologist colleagues. From this point on scientists started to change crop's DNA making them bigger, healthier and more resistant. This was an important milestone in the green revolution and contributed to increase world population because it decreased hunger and deaths associated with hunger.

  • 4 Billion People Milestone!

According to Worldometers Website, in 1974 the world population achieved a milestone of 4,000,000,000 people! At this date the world population doubled again! It took 123 years for the population to reach two billion and only 45 years later it doubled. Worldometers.info. "Current World Population." World Population Clock: 7.4 Billion People (2016).
