  • French & Indian War

    French & Indian War
    It was fought to take control over the land in North America. The British fought to take claim land in North America, sucha as land to the Ohio Valley and farther. The colonists were very happy because they were getting more land.
  • Treaty of Paris 1763

    Treaty of Paris 1763
    British got all of land east of Mississippi river. Britian established this treaty to expand their territory into Ohio Valley. Colonists were angry because they were getting attacked by Native Americans.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    The colonists weren't allowed to settle to the west of the Appalachians. The British did this to stay away from conflict with the Native Americans. A few colonists still went to the west and put themselves in danger anyways.
  • Sugar Act

    The sugar act was a law placed on sugar and molasses purchased by the colinists. The british reason was to get money from the colinists to have more money back home. The colonists reaction was they were angry at Great Britain.
  • Writs of Assisstance

    Writs of Assisstance
    Allowed soldiers to search ships at will to catch merchants with illegal goods. Merchants thought it was an invasion of privacy but colonists weren't really affected by this.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    A tax was placed on household items such as glass, lead, silk, sugar, etc. British put this tax onto these items to help pay off their debt from previous wars. The colonists boycotted these items and were very upset.
  • Quartering act

    Quartering act
    Colonists had to provide housing, food, and supplies for British soldiers. Britain inforced this to keep soldiers safe and well treated. Colonists hated this very much but couldn't do much about it.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    An angered mob of colonists attacked the British soldiers and 5 colonists were killed. The british fought in self defense. The colonists were scared and angry.

    This was a law passed to a tax on purchasing tea. Britain did this get make more money. The colonists reacted by having the Boston Tea Party.

    Sons of liberty, dressed up as Native Americans, and took 90,000 pounds of tea and dumped it into Boston Harbor. Britain wanted to make more money by putting the tax on tea. The colonists point was proved.

    Colonists weren't allowed to hold town meetings for government. The British did this to anger the colonists. In return the colonists tarred and feathered officials.

    Delegates met in Philadelphia to discuss and agree to ban all trade with britain until acts werre repealed and try to reason and not have war.
  • "Give Me Liberty" speech

    "Give Me Liberty" speech
    Patrick Henry gave a speech at The House of Burgesses saying it was the peoples duty to act upon the event if they feel threatened to act on it. Colonists got rallied up and were ready to fight.
  • Battle of Lexington and Concord

    Battle of Lexington and Concord
    70 militia men waited as 700 British troops reached Lexington. It is unknown who shot first but Raplh Emerson said it was the "shot heard around the world". Britain planned on capturing Lexington and Concord. Colonists were scared and worried.

    Delegates met in Philadelphia and agreed to form Continental army and chose George Washington as commanding general.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Battle of Bunker Hill
    Set up the hill were British soldiers, Not odered to shoot "until you see the whites of their eyes." The British planned on taking over and gain control of more territory. The colonists were doubtful.

    Thomas Paine created a pamphlet stating "we shouldn't be governed by a little island thousands of miles away." Colonists were to agree and this started a fire inside of everyone.

    British wanted to capture New York City because it was the center of colonial economy for the colonists. British attacked Washington's army and caused many casualties.,

    Document Written by Thomas Jefferson that announced their freedom from Britain. It took Thomas Jefferson 2 weeks to complete and be signed. Colonists were happy.
  • Battle of Trenton & Trenton

    Battle of Trenton & Trenton
    Washington launched a surprise attack on British and captures over 800 hessians. In Jan. 1777 Washington captures 300 British soldiers at Princeton New Jersey. Washington lost Brandywine & Germantown allowing British to occupy Philadelphia for winter.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    Battle of Saratoga
    British General Burgoyne planned to cut off New England from the rest of the colonies. American General Haratio Gates surrounded Burgoynes forces at Saratoga. Burgoyne surrendered his army to the Americans. This is what makes this battle the turning point in the war, and also because Benjamin Franklin formed the Treaty of Alliance which where Spain agreed to join forces with Americans and fight againist Britain.

    Document signafying the end of the war. Britain had to recognize the United States as a independent nation.U.S. gained all land east of Mississippi River. U.S. had to give all the land taken from the Loyalists back.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Battle of Yorktown
    British General Lord Cornwallis Virgina while a fleet of French battleships sailed, trapping Cornwallis. After a three week attack Cornwallis surrendered his army to Washington. Americans won their independence from Britian.
