Geologic Timeline

  • Cambrian Period 570-500 MYA

    Cambrian Period 570-500 MYA
Earliest record of marine life, Trilobites are dominant. This is the period of time where things changed for Earth. There started to be multi-cellular organisms living on the planet. Moluscs and anthropods became common and into existence.
  • Ordivician Period 485-445 MYA

    Ordivician Period 485-445 MYA
This period was ended by a mass extinction. Molluscs and anthropods completely dominated the ocean. Fish, the worlds first vertibrates, They evolved into invertabrates with jaw bones.
  • Silurian Period 443-419 MYA

    Silurian Period 443-419 MYA
This began the diversification of bony and jawed fish. Life also began to form on Earth as small moss like, vascular plants which grew besides streams, and rivers, and lakesides. Also in arthropods.
  • Devonian Period 420-360 MYA

    Devonian Period 420-360 MYA
The ancestors of tetrapods began to walk around on the land and adapt to the conditions of the Earth. Their fins started evolving into legs so they could adapt. Trilobites and mollusks were still common in the reefs and oceans. The Late Devonian extinction completely wiped out all of the mollusks and trilobites.
  • Carboniferous Period 360-300 MYA

    Carboniferous Period 360-300 MYA
Amphibians were the dominant land species, then they would later evolve into reptiles. Arthropods roamed and the forests were the ones that are now the large coal beds. An extinction happened because of the change of climate.
  • Permian Period 300-250 MYA

    Permian Period 300-250 MYA
Diversification of mammals, turtles, lepidosaurs, and archosaurs. The world was just one massive continent called Pangea. Also surrounded by a global ocean called Panthalassa. The extensive rainforests of carboniferous disappeared. Leaving vast regions of desert. Then followed by a huge mass extinction, the largest in history.
  • Triassic Period 250-200 MYA

    Triassic Period 250-200 MYA
This period followed the huge mass extinction that was just before this and it left the atmosphere impoverished. Therapsids and archosaurs were the main species that were dominant in this time period. Dinosaurs didnt become popular and dominant until the jurrasic period. Mostly hot and dry climate and pangea also started drifting away into its own continents.
  • Jurassic Period 200-145 MYA

    Jurassic Period 200-145 MYA
Pangea began to shift into the two main continents Laurasia and Gondwana. Crocodiles and birds were dominant and also dinosaurmorph. Including the period in which the earliest lizards and therian mammals.
  • Cretaceous Period 145-66 MYA

    Cretaceous Period 145-66 MYA
Warm climate and high sea levels creating alot of shallow inland seas. Alot of species were extinct in the ocean while dinosaurs on earth roamed and were dominant. It all ended with a Mass-extinction wiping out everything.
  • Tertiary Period 65-2.5 MYA

    Tertiary Period 65-2.5 MYA
This is when the demise of the non-flying dinosaurs happened, at the beginning of the cenozoic era and spanned to the beginning to the quaternary glaciation. It also included the Pleistocene.
  • Quaternary Period 2.5-0 MYA

    Quaternary Period 2.5-0 MYA
Carbon dating is enclosed in this period. This is the time in which humans started to change the way the Earth was.
