Ida Tarbell was born in Western Pennslyvania. She was the daughter of an independant Oil company, and later went to Allegheny College. When she graduated she became a writer.

In 1868 Du Bois was born in Great Barrington Massachusettes. He went to school with both black and white children. It wasn't until highschool that he realized that people were judged by the color of their skin.

Florence Kelly worked at getting the Illinois Legislature tocreatwrking conditions for women and children. For women, she had the number of hours they were allowed to work a day reduced. She also wanted them to prohbit child labor.

Ida Tarbell was to investigate Standard Oil for McClure's. She published 19 articles on the practices of the Standard Oil Copmany throughout her investigation. Her readers called her "The Terror of the Trusts".

In 1910, 70% of all industrial workers had to work 54 hours a week. One Pittsburgh Steel Mill's had a death toll of 25% every year. The employee's had very rough woring conditions.

In 1911 the Triangle Shirt company burst into flames. There was a cigarette thrown into a trash can full of flammable material. The fire escape route was locked because the bosses thought that the women would steal fabric. Over 140 people perished.
