    The Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolution and formally recognized America as an independent nation. The U.S. gained the territory through the treaty, The treaty was signed by John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, and David Hartley. The U.S. wanted to control the territory to recognize American independence.

    Jays treaty was signed by American statesman John Jay, It eliminated British control of western ports and gave the Americans limited rights to trade in the West Indies. The U.S. gained back rights that the British had taken away and used the land to trade with different countries.

    The Louisiana Purchase was the transfer of land from the French to the Americans. The territory was from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains and cost around $15 million. Napoleon Bonaparte sold the land to the U.S. because they did not have enough money to defend themselves from the British. Jefferson wanted the land in order to explore the territory.

    The Lewis, Clark, and Sacajawea Expedition to find a water route to the Pacific Ocean and to chart all the unknown lands, plants and animals they encountered. The U.S. gained the territory by buying the lands from France. Lewis and Clark were appointed by the government to go on the expedition and on their way they met Sacajawea, a Shoshone Indian, helped them on their journey.

    National Road was the first road to be federally funded and was made to connect Cumberland, Maryland to the Ohio river. The Road was built from 1811 to 1834. It was called "The Main Street of America"

    The Anglo-American Convention of 1818 set boundaries between the U.S. and the soon to be Canada territory. Britain sent Charles Bagot to the U.S. to meet with Secretary of State James Monroe. They came to an agreement and ratified it on April 28. 1818.

    The U.S buys Florida from Spain for 5 million dollars. The U.S also claims Texas. The treaty was named after John Quincy Adams and Luis de Onis of Spain and was signed in February 22, 1819

    The Santa Fe Trail is opened by William Becknell. The trail connects New Mexico to Missouri and allows trade between the various states of the U.S. and helps make transportation easier.

    President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act forcing Native Americans to move from their native lands to lands in the west. Jackson thought that the Indians needed his help and that he was bettering life for them. By 1837 46,000 Native American were removed from their lands.
  • Black Hawk War

    The war was led by Sauk Indian Black Hawk, a thousand Indians followed him back to their native lands after being forced to move by the Indian Removal Act. The Indians just wanted to plant some seeds, but militia men attacked the Black Hawk and things became uneasy between the two groups. Black Hawk and his son surrendered and were put in prison until August 1833.

    The Oregon Trail was discovered in 1824 by Jedediah Smith and Thomas Fitzpatrick. The trail was meant for wagons but was soon people began to use different methods of transportation.

    Britain didnt really like the idea of U.S. growing bigger but they did not want to add Texas to their Empire.The government of Mexico agreed to acknowledge the independence of Texas on condition that she not annex herself to any country. U.S. Congress voted for annexation and a state constitution, drawn up by the convention, was ratified in October 1845.
  • Mormon Trek

    The Mormon Trek was led by Brigham Young and his 3,000 followers. The Mormons wanted to reach Utah before winter, but they had a hard time because of the bad weather. On June of 1846, the first group of Mormons reached the Missouri River. Young decided that they should not try to get to Utah by the time they intended because it was impossible so they stayed in Missouri until spring.
    By the time they had reached their destination 400 Mormons had died.

    The Oregon Treaty ended joint occupancy of the Pacific Northwest between Great Britain and the U.S after 28 years. On August 14, 1848, Congress formally established the Oregon Territory, which are now Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

    James Marshall and his crew were building a saw mill for John Sutter when Marshall discovered a few gold nuggets in the dirt. The discovery was made public on the March 15 issue of "The Californian" in San Francisco.

    James Gadsden was the grandson of Christopher Gadsden who was a South Carolina Revolutionary soldier. The Gadsden Purchase was an area of 45,535 square miles. The land was nearly 30,000,000 acres and only cost about thirty-three cents an acre. The U.S. wanted to buy enough territory from Mexico to build a railroad to the Gulf of California.

    The Port of Entry Act was created to keep outside countries from taking the fish from the Marshall Islands. It also regulated the amount of cargo that a ship could transport.

    On March 30, 1867, the U.S. purchased Alaska for $7.2 million. It was signed by Secretary of State William Seward and Russian Minister to the U.S. Edouard de Stoeckl. The U.S. gained Alaska and is still part of the U.S.

    The U.S declared war on Spain after the sinking of the Battleship Maine in the Havana harbor. The war when the Treaty of Paris was signed and the U.S. gained control of Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines Islands, Guam, and many more islands. The U.S put military bases in them.The Philippines is the only one not under U.S control anymore.
