Total Monarchy Ends
King Luis XVI was in total control of france. Many people disliked him because he was considered a weak leader and did not solve many of the problems in france. The people could not take it anymore and overthrew the monarchy.

From 1789 to 1791 the National Assembly was the government of France. The main goal of the Assembly was to write a new constitution on how the government should be run.

Storming of Bastille
The people of france were very angry at the way the government was run so they stormed Bastille, a prison. From that point on July 14 is known as Bastille day. -

After 2 years of arguing, the National Assembly wrote the first Constitution in which the National Convention would be France's government.

In 1793 Luis was accused of being against the revolution and was sent the death by guillotine. -

The 1 year that Robespierre was the head of The Committee of Public safety, was known as the Reign of Terror because of all of the executions he had done on internal enemies. Delegates, afraid they may be next turned on him and demanded his execution.

The Directory
Leaders in the National Convention had come up with the 3rd Constitution which would be called The Directory. This Constitution demanded that there we 2 houses of 5 men, the legislative and the executive, that governed france. -
Napoleon
In 1789 Napoleon marched his army to the palace that the Directory was held in and took over without a fight.
