  • The French/Indian War

    The French/Indian War
    Also known as the 7 year war the French and Indian fought the British in a struggle over land. The French built a fort in Ohio, but both the French and British claimed this territory as their own. This caused the British to expel them. The war cost the French their land east of the Mississippi river and the British claimed all the land in Canada. However, the French got to keep two islands near Newfoundland.

  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act
    The Stamp imposed taxes on all documents and printed items. People were to get a stamp on the item to prove that they paid taxes. This affected the colonists the most because it imposed on goods and services. The colonists had enough of this and on May 1765 they united and formed a group called Sons of Liberty. this group consisted of shopkeepers, artisans, and laborers. This ultimately led the British and the Colonists closer to war.

    Townshend act
    The Parliament then passed the Townshend act, named after Charles Townshend, which imposed taxes on goods that were imported from Britain. There were taxes placed on lead, glass, paint, and paper. There was also tax placed on tea. This was big because tea was the most popular drink in the colonies.   • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    Tension was gowning between the colonists and the British soldiers. On March 5 1770 a crowd of colonists gathered around British soldiers and threw snowballs. When one of the soldiers were hit they started shooting, even though they were ordered not to. five colonists were shot and killed on that day. The first man who got shot was an African American sailor. Out of the five that were killed he is the most widely known.

    This act was devised by Lord North in order to save the almost bankrupt East India Company. This act granted the company to sell tea free of taxes that the colonial tea sellers were required to pay. This act would have cut the colonial merchants out of the tea trade by allowing The East Indian company would be able to sell their tea directly to the consumers for less.

    Intolerable acts
    King George III pressed the parliament to act and they did by passing many acts that the colonists called the Intolerable acts.     The continental congress were a group of 56 delegates from 12 colonies who met in secret to discuss important issues. The first continental congress came together to act together against the intolerable acts.     Lexington and Concord
    This night Paul Revere, William Dawes, and Samuel Prescott left to spread the word that 700 hundred British troops were on their way to Concord. The British ordered the 70 minutemen lined up to put down their guns and leave but they disobeyed. Instead, a shot was fired and the British started shooting. 10 minutemen were killed and ten injured but only one British soldier was hurt. This battle was the first of the Revolutionary War

    Publishing of Common Sense
    Published by Thomas Paine the pamphlet became an instant bestseller in both the colonies and in Europe. In his pamphlet he talks about how the all the suffering in the colonies is king George III and the monarchy's fault. He is the one who gave rise to the idea of a revolution. He talked about how independence would let America trade more freely and have a better society.

This act greatly affected the colonists and they came together to defy it. On May 1765 a group called the Sons Of liberty consisting of shopkeepers, laborers, and artisans came together to go against the law. Ultimately this pushed the colonists and Britain closer to war.
