Eleanor, discovered personal letters between her husband and her social secretary (Lucy Mercer) when he retuned from a trip to Europe. She offered FDR a divorce, but his mother was adamant that there be no divorce, it was unacceptable. Eleanor made him cut it off (unsure if it really was cut off) and Eleanor stopped giving all physical attention to FDR. The affair became public in 1966 years after his death.

This New Deal created a variety of programs designed to produce relief, recovery, and reform. The relief was through government jobs for the unemployed, recovery was through economic growth and reform was through regulation of Wall Street, banks and transportation. The economy improved rapidly fromt his from 1933 to 1937.

FDR caleld this special congress because he told the members that unemployement could only be solved by direct recruiting by the Government itself. For the next 3 months he proposed and Congress passed a series of important bills called the "NEW DEAL"
