Both the United States and the Soviet Union thought that rocket research would be important for military purposes. The moon landing with Armstrong and Aldrin showed the first Americans on the moon.

    Segregated Busses

    President Truman's executive order abolished discrimination "on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin" in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Montgomery Bus Boycott was a protest campaign against the policy of racial segregation on the public transit system of Montgomery, Alabama. These two events are related to the racially integrated military bus that Forrest boarded because these events are also in the same era of which the Civil Rights movements were happening.

    Hippies were members of a movement that usually rejected the mainstream American life. They advocated for non-violence and love. They were often criticized for their anti-work and pro-drug mentalities.

    SDS is known as the Students for a Democratic Society. The goals of this group and its members were to address problems of poverty. They also protested universities academic polices and the war.

    "Charlie" was a nickname for the Viet Song. Charlie referred to communist forces in general.

    Napalm and Agent Orange were used to destroy Vietnamese Forrests. Napalm was a flammable gel and Agent Orange was a herbicide. They were so controversial because of the photographs that were taken of the forests and people burning.

    George Wallace was an American politician. He was pro-segregation and was elected governor of Alabama in 1962, 1970, 1974, and 1982. He also ran for president. He famously said "...segregation now, tomorrow, & forever". He wanted to challenge JFK and keep Alabama segregated.

    Robert Kennedy was also an American politician as well as a lawyer. He collaborated with President Kennedy when he proposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He also believed that all people have a basic human right to participate in the political decisions that affect their lives. He was very important in the civil rights and other movements.

    Ping-Pong Diplomacy was the exchange of table tennis players between the U.S. and China. It began in 1971 during the World Table Tennis Championships in Japan. The Americans who came over to China were the first to be there in a while. This helped solve diplomatic relations.

    Nixon visited China in 1972. He removed China as a Cold War foe. He eased tension with both China and the Soviet Union. He also got U.S. troops out of Vietnam.

    The Watergate Scandal was a break-in to the Democratic National Headquarters that led to multiple investigations. The break-in was linked to President Nixon's re-election campaigns. The House of Judiciary Committee approved articles of impeachment against Nixon which led to him resigning.

    The disease first appeared in the 1980s and became an epidemic among homosexual men. Drug users who shared needles, blood transfusion patients, and women with infected sexual partners were also at risk of contracting AIDS. AIDS is an auto immune deficiency syndrome. It is different that HIV because HIV is the virus and AIDS is the conditon.
