First New Deal and Second New Deal

  • Reforestation Relief Act

    This act established the Civilian Conservation Corps. The CCC provided work for 250,000 men in reforestation and conservation. This was successful because it helped with the country's unemployment issues and provided money for families.
  • Federal Emergency Relief Act

    This gave loans to states to create relief programs. It also tried to create jobs for unemployed. It was unsucessful because lots of money was put into the programs and jobs but little was produced.
  • Agricultural Adjustment Act

    This act tried to raise the price of crops. In order to reduce the surplus, farmers were given subsidies to stop production of certain crops and kill off excess livestock. This first act was unsucessful because it was deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.
  • Tennessee Valley Authority

    The TVA built dams to prevent flooding, conserve forests, and bring electricity to rural areas. It was successful because it created jobs for many Americans and provided electricity. It is still active today.
  • Glass-Steagall Act

    This Act established the FDIC which provided government insurance for bank deposits. This was successful because it restored the public's confidence in banks.
  • Homeowners' Loan Corporation

    This gave low interest mortgages and longer payment plans to homeowners. This was successful because helped people who were employed keep their homes.
  • National Industrial Recovery Act

    This established the PWA and the NRA. The PWA provided public works jobs for millions of workers. The NRA tried to regulate trade, minimun wages, and union rights. The NRA was a failure because it was unconstitutional and ended up benefiting big businesses.
  • Farm Credit Administration

    This helped farmers refinance their mortgages and keep their land. It was successful in the short-term because it helped farmers from being forclosed. However, in the long-term it was unsuccessful because it helped unefficient farms keep their land.
  • Civil Works Administration

    This directly provided public works jobs to millions of workers. It was successful in getting people through the winter but was shut down because it spent too much too quickly.
  • Securities Exchange Act

    This regulated the stock market and margin buying. It established the Securitires and Exchange Commission to enforce the new regulations and prevent fraud.
  • Works Progress Administration

    Employed millions of workers in public works jobs and the arts. It was successful because it provided work for over 8 million workers.
  • Rural Electrification Administration

    This administration tried to bring electricity to farms. It was unsuccessful because by 1940 less than half of the farms had electricity.
  • National Youth Administration

    This provided part-time jobs and job training to high school and college students. This was successful because it gave young adults the ability to become more self-sufficient.
  • Wagner Act

    This act established the National Labor Relations Board. It helped create unions and empower workers. The act was successful because it helped many unions form gave power to workers.
  • Social Security Act

    This act provided unemployment insurance and monthly retirement pensions for people over 65. It also provided aid for people with disabilities. It was successful because it helped many people and is still active today. However, at the time it was unsuccessful in helping farm and domestic workers.
