Canada is named from the Native Algonguin word for village- "Kanata"
The name originated from a First Nation word "Kanata" for village, settlement or land. the british came and asked the first nations what the land was called, but the First nations thought they were talking about the town so they said "Kanata" which meant village or town. -
Champlain supports the Algonquin against the Iroquois at Lake Champlain. The Iroquois will later be allies of the British
Champlain attempted to form better realations with the local native tribes. He made alliances with Wendat, Algonquin, Montagnais and the Etchemin. The tribes demanded that Champlain help them in the war against the Iroquois. -

Europeans introduce disease to Native people to wich they have no resistance;half of the Huron die.
The disease " samllpoxx" wiped out the Huran Nations, it wiped out almost half of their population and hundreds of Natives died each day. The Iroquois had been enemies with the Nations North of the Saint Lawrence River. The Iroquois saw their chance and wiped out all who were still alive. -
The Red River settlers establish themselves in Canada nothwest (Ruperts Land
A scottish man saw suffering of the highland scottish families and wanted to help, he wanted to help emigrate them to the british parts of North America. He made 3 attempts at establishing a coloney, first was in P.E.I then at Baldoon then he bought a large piece of land from the Hudsons Bay company a brought the families to settle there. -
Robert Semple, the govenor of territories for HBC, killed by Metis allies of the North West CO.,along with other Red River colonist in the battle of seven Oaks making the birth of the Metis Nation
A Band of Metis were traveling to meeting with some traders of the North west Company and they were going to sell stuff to them. They were met by Robert Semple and his group of HBC men. They argued and a gun fight started which Robert semple got killed. -

The United States strategy was to kill the buffalo to destroy the indian population. They intended to wipe them out to "make room" for american settlers and cattle. It resulted in displacement and death of indians and the almost extinction of the buffalo. -

Canada bought Ruperts Land from the HBC, canadian government appointed a english-speaking govenor named William McDogall. He was disliked by the french-speaking (Metis) when McDougal sent out surveyors to plot the land the metis led by Lois Riel prevented them from entering the territory. -

The negotiation of treaty 6 took place during a hard time for the plains Cree, they wew suffering from the rapid decline of buffalo. It includes medical care. -
Lois riel; and the Metis clash with the NorthWest mounted at Duck Lake and are defeated. The Metis are upset with the feteral government over land issues. Riel is captured, convicted of treason and hanged.
North west rebellion or Second Riel Rebellion. The metis believed tat canada failed to address the protection of their rights, land, and survival as distinct people. Metis formed provisional government and armed force. North West Mounted Police and volunteers met up with Metis and ended up defeating them. -
Treaty # 8- Northern Alberta
Its in the northern half of alberta, northeast quarter of British Columbia, and the northwest corner of Saskatchewan. It was based on Treaty Seven with some changes reflectiong local conditions. -
Yukon First Nations sign agreement on land claims & self- government
An agreement for Indian self government was reached. The 4 first nations who reached the agreement were Nacho Nyack Dun, Champagne and Aishihik First nations, Vuntut Gwitvhin First Nations and Telin Hingit Council. -
Indian Act amended to allow band members living off reserve vote in band elections and referendums
First Nations wether they lived off or on a reserve, and if they are 18 years or older, have the right to vote in the Indian Act elections and referendums held by your first nation. Voting regulations changed.
