The French and Indian war was a battle over territory in the New world between France, Britain, and The Natives living there. Although Britain was constantly losing battle after battle they managed to capture victory and take most of the French's land at the cost of a large sum of debt which was the main cause behind the American Revolution and future taxes. The French and Indian War ended in 1763 by the signing of The Treaty of Paris. -
In 1763 a follow up to The Treaty of Paris was titled 'The Proclamation of 1763' which forbade all colonists from settling West of The Appalachian Mountains. This proclamation was made to ease tensions between The Native Americans and Colonists after The French and Indian War. This angered colonists because this limited their right to travel anywhere -
This act marked the beginning of what was called 'Taxation without Representation'. The Sugar Act was a tax on the colonists' sugar and molasses in order to pay of the debt that was gained during the French and Indian War. This tax angered colonists because this tax was enforced on them without their consent thus violating their individual rights. The oncoming taxes enforced by British Parliament was one of the many reasons the American Revolution broke out. -
The Stamp Act was yet another tax that angered colonists once again. This act taxed the colonists' stamps, papers, and legal documents. After this tax was enacted protests against British rule became more frequent and would later take a turn for the worst -
The Boston Massacre was the turning point in the increasing tensions between the British and colonists alike. The Boston Massacre was a dispute between an angry mob of colonists who were swearing, hitting, and overall provoking the eight panic-stricken British Soldiers who on survival instinct shot at the crowd, thus killing five colonists. This event was heavily publicized by Paul Revere's Painting (This slide's picture) which demonized the soldiers for killing the five civilians. -
The Tea act was a tax on tea but not only did the colonists have to pay extra for tea, they could ONLY buy the tea FROM ONLY ONE COMPANY thus creating a monopoly in which the king profited on. The Colonists felt cheated because of this. After this act the outbreak of American rebellion became more prominent in the colonies -
The Boston Tea Party was a violent political protest against the Tea act which was seen as a win to the patriots but was seen as an outrage to The British King. On December 16, 1773, a group known as 'The Sons of Liberty' dressed up as Native Americans and snuck into Boston harbor at midnight to throw 342 chests of tea that the king refused to send back to England. This event angered King George III because he spent a 18,000 pounds on the tea that is now in the harbor because of his subjects -
A series of laws passed on the citizens of Massachusetts in order to punish them for The Boston Tea Party and make them pay back The British East Indian Company for throwing their tea away. This act limited the things the colonists could do and this infuriated them endlessly as they didn't like being told what to do by a country that barley even governed them in the first place. -
(This event is after the Olive Branch) British soldiers march toward a Massachusetts town intending to steal and destroy the colonists weapons but the colonists know what's coming to them so they hide the weapons and begin to fight the oncoming British soldiers which leads to the first shots of the revolution being fired. This event marks the beginning of the American Revolution and now it is evident that this war can no longer be avoided as the first shots are fired and heard around the world. -
The Olive Branch Petition was ultimately a last ditch effort to sort things out with Britain and avoid war. This was a failure because of King George III's refusal to listen and make amends with the colonists. The King's refusal to listen to the colonists made it crystal clear that the king never intended nor wanted to listen to his subjects in the first place and that if the colonists wanted things to change they had to change things themselves, meaning that war is now unavoidable for everyone.
