The Free African Society was found by Richard and Absalom Jones. The society was found as a mutual aid organization who was devoted to helping widowed, ill, or out-of-work African-Americans. It was also dedicated to abolishing the evil institution of slavery. -

The ballon was launched from the Walnut Street Jail by French aeronaut Jean Pierre Blanchard. He was carried 5,800 feet into the air.
