    When farming first began

    When farming first began
    Farming around the industrial revolution time was all done by hand and horse power. Sinse they had to do everything manually they needed as many workers as they could.

    Saxon Farming

    Saxon farming in the middle ages was done by using up to 8 oxen pulling ploughs. The fields were divided into a couple strips a couple were ploughed and sown with crops while the others were left to fallow.
  • Farming During the 17th century

    Before the big change in the 18th century with the agricultural revolution most livestock was slaughtered before winter so they had enough food to last the winter. Most land was divided into three fields, Each year 2 fields were sown with crops while the third was left to fallow.
  • Agricultural Revolution

    By the mid-1800's the agricultral revolution had spread throughout most of North America and Europe. Tools have been made to make farming easier. For example plows to hook to horses, because of this fewer people were needed to farm so lots of families moved to cities to work in factories.

    In 1831, Cyrus H. McCormick developed the first successful reaper.This is a horse-drawn machine that harvested wheat.
  • Combines

    The first combine was invented in 1838, early combines were driven by 16 horses or more. Later they were pulled by steam engines and then combined into a single machine. This machine could cut and tresh over 100 acres in a day. Now today we have very high tech combines that run on fuel.

    In 1850 the first corn picker was invented.

    Before the 1860's hay was cut by hand with sickles and scythes. Soon inventors helped the farmers cultivate. Farmers started using single-row horse- drawn equiptment. It was used to loosen the soil and kill the weeds. After this invention there were many more cultivators invented.

    The first engine powered farm tractors used steam and were intvented in 1868. The most popular steam tractor was the Garrett 4CD.

    Farming Today
    Farming technology has changed trumendously over time. We went by doing everything by hand to everything by machinery. In today's world it's a good thing we have all this farming technology because I dont know how we'd live. Now they even have machinery that drive themselves and you just have to turn at the end. All this technology has made everyones lifes so much easier.
