Balboa asked the king for 1,000 men to come on an exhibition to discover the Other Sea. An enemy of Balboa, Lawyer Enciso who returned to Spain, convinced King Ferdinand that Balboa sent the old governor of Darien, Nicuesa, out to sea in a leaky boat to drown. The king belived Enciso and wouldn't gives Balboa the requested troops. Instead, he planned to send a new governor to take over Balboa's job.

Since the king wouldn't send Balboa men, Balboa set out with 190 of his own men to find the Other Sea(now the Pacific). Balboa thought that if he found the Other Sea the King would keep him as governor of Darien.

Balboa is the first European to see the Western part of the Pacific Ocean. He claims the ocean for Spain.

Balboa was accused of treason against Spain although he had been loyal to Spain his whole life. He was publicly beheaded.
