    First Draft of a Submarine

    First Draft of a Submarine
Englishman William Bourne drafted the first design for a submarine, which was influenced by ballast tanks. His drafted design involved wooden frames that were covered by waterproof leather. His designs never exceeded the drawing phase. (Exact date unknown.) http://inventors.about.com/od/timelines/tp/SubmarineTimeline.htm
  • First Functional Submarine

    First Functional Submarine
Cornelis Jacobszoon Drebbel, a Dutch physicist and inventor, created the first functional submarine. His submarine was a wooden boat encased in leather, carried about 15 people, and used oars to move in the water. He tested it on the River Thames. He was the first to acknowledge the problem of a declining air supply while submerged. (Exact date unknown) http://inventors.about.com/od/famousinventions/fl/Cornelis-Jacobszoon-Drebbel.htm
  • Bushnell's Turtle Submarine

    Bushnell's Turtle Submarine
David Bushnell, a member of the Colonial Army during the American Revolutionary War, builds a submarine called the Turtle. It was piloted by one man and was human-powered. The Colonial Army used the Turtle in an attempt to sink British ships that were in a blockade of New York harbor (Sep. 07). It was the first submarine to be used in military combat. http://inventors.about.com/od/timelines/tp/SubmarineTimeline.htm
  • Fulton's Nautilis

    Fulton's Nautilis
Robert Fulton, an American inventor, designed the Nautilis submarine, which was the first submarine to have different propulsion systems for underwater and above water (the use of a sail when surfaced and the use of a hand-cranked propeller when submerged). It had a two man crew that and carried compressed air for the crew members. It's first test dive took place on July 29th, 1800. http://inventors.about.com/od/sstartinventions/a/Submarines_4.htm
  • The Brandtaucher

    The Brandtaucher
The Prussian army corporal Willhelm Bauer ordered for the construction of a submarine when the Danish Navy blockaded Kiel. The submarine was coated with iron and used a treadmill to to drive the propeller. The buoyancy was controlled by ballast tanks like Bourne's submarine in his drafts. • Holland Creates Blueprint for Submarine Design

Holland Creates Blueprint for Submarine Design
John P. Holland builds the Holland VIII, which used a petroleum engine and an electric engine for propulsion. The petroleum engine was used for above water operations while the electric engine was used for underwater operations. Navies around the world used that design to construct their submarines. (Exact date unknown) http://inventors.about.com/od/timelines/tp/SubmarineTimeline.htm
  • The Aigrette

    The Aigrette
The French submarine named Aigrette (meaning "egret") was the first submarine to be designed with a diesel engine for propulsion above water and an electric engine for propulsion underwater. http://inventors.about.com/od/timelines/tp/SubmarineTimeline.htm
  • First Nuclear Powered Submarine

    First Nuclear Powered Submarine
The United States of America constructs the USS Nautilis, a nuclear powered submarine that allowed the ship to remain underwater for an infinite stretch of time. It was the first true submersible. http://inventors.about.com/od/timelines/tp/SubmarineTimeline.htm
