    Australopithecus Afarensis  (Southern Ape)
    Australopithecus Afarensis: lived around 4 million years ago and the first discovered of the Southern Ape was Lucy discoverded by Donald Johanson. Australopithecus Afarensis was about three ft. tall with a protuding forehead and jaw which shaded the eyes and most likely helped the early hominids chew strong hide. Australopithecus Afarensis was able to walk on two feet which helped gather and carry items with ease.

    Homo Habilis: lived about 2 million years ago and were much taller than Australopithecus Afarensis which probaly helped them hunt faster. Their brains were 2/3 the size of a modern human. Scientists believe that the Homo Habilis lived in small groups which helped them work together and protect themselves from animal attacks. The homo habilis also could collect more food over larger areas of land. "Handy Man's " tools were simple thing s such as shells to skin animals and spears to hunt.

    Homo Erectus: lived about 1.8 million years ago. It is believed that Homo Erectus was the first group of hominids to migrate out of Africa. They had very thick bones which inabled them to run as well as walk which helped them travel fasterand hunt better. Their larger brains inabled them to use fire to cook and defend themselves. They also used more complex tools than Homo Habilis.

    Homo Sapiens Neanderthaleusis: lived about 230,000-30,000 years ago. These hominids were much like modern humans today. They had thick bones and a ridge above their eyes which probaly was used as a viser. The Homo Sapiens Neanderthaleusis were found in Africa, Near East, and parts of Asia. The Neanderthaleusis used their intelligence tocreate more than 60 types of tools. They were very skilled at making knives, spearspoints, and hind scrappers.

    Homo Sapiens Sapiens: lived about 35,000-12,000 years ago. They were found in Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia. This first modern man had rounded skulls, large brains, small teeth, and smaller bones. Homo Sapiens Sapiens were able to create better tools, shelter, and clothing. They made tools for engraving, sculpting, and sewing as well as painting. They invented the spear thrower and the bow and arrow.
