Sugar Act

Apr 5, 1764

Helped raised money for Britain. It mostly hurt shipping businesses in the New England Colonies.

Stamp Act

Nov 1, 1765

It put a tax on as many papers items in the colonies. Newspapers, legal documents, and playing cards had to have a stamp to show that they’re paid for.

Townshend Act

Jul 2, 1767

It taxed imports like glass, tea, paint, and paper. It set up a new group of tax collectors.

Boston Massacre

Mar 5, 1770

Anger between the colonists and the British soldiers. British destroyed colonial property.

Repeal of the Townshend Acts

Apr 12, 1770

Townshend Acts were partially repealed except for the tax on tea.

Boston Tea Party

Dec 16, 1773

It passed the Tea Act. Gave Britain’s East India Company monopoly.

Coercive Acts

Mar 30, 1774

Passed new set of laws. Punish all Mass. Colonists.

1st Continental Congress

Jun 5, 1774

A meeting in the North America. Reminded the King of the colonists’ basic rights as British citizens.

Lexington and Concord

Apr 18, 1775

British General Thomas Gage sent 700 soldiers to destroy guns and ammunition the colonists had stored in the town of Concord, just outside of Boston.

2nd Continental Congress

May 10, 1775

They met in Philadelphia. Talked about what colonist should do.

Battle of Bunker Hill

Jun 17, 1775

George Washington - leader. Really happened at Battle of Breed's Hill.

Olive Branch Petition

Jul 5, 1775

It meant peace. Its symbol is an ancient peace sign.
