Events that led up to the American Revolution

  • French and Indian War

    French and Indian War
    A struggel between France and Britian in North America. Ended with the defeat of France and the transfer of French Canada to Britian.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    A law in which Parliament created the first direct taxation of goods within the British colonies of North America. Colonists had to purchase special stamps to prove payment of tax. The colonists reacted by boycotting British goods and they formed a resistance group called Sons of Liberty.
  • Townshend act

    Townshend act
    Britian taxed colonial imports. They stationed troops at major ports to protect custom officers. The caused the colonists to protest "taxation without representation" and they organized boycotts of imported goods.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    When taunted by an angry mob, British troops fire into the crowd and end up killing five colonists. Colonials label this a massacre and they published a dramatic engraving describing the violence.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    Britian gives the East India Company special concessions in the colonial tea business causing the colonial merchants to shut down.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    Boston rebels sneak out at night dressed as Inians and take action gainst three British tea ships. They dumped 18,000 pounds of the East India Company's tea into the water.
  • Intolerable acts

    Intolerable acts
    King George III tightens control over Massachusettes by closing Boston Harbor and quartering troops. This causes the colonial leaders to form the First Continential Congress and draw up a decleration of colonial rights.
  • First Continental Congress

    First Continental Congress
    Delegates met and drew up a decleration of colonial rights. It stated that the colonies had rights to run ther own affairs and stated that, if British used force against the colonies, the colonies would fight back
  • Lexington and Concord

    Lexington and Concord
    When General Cage orders troops to march to Concord and seize colonial weapons, the Minutemen intercept the British and battle-first at Lexington and then at Concord.
  • Second Continental Congress

    This was readying the colonies for war. They were mostly discussing on how to formally seperate from England.
  • Publishing of Common Sense

    Publishing of Common Sense
    Common sense is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine, it attacked King George and the monarchy. It also called for seperation of the colonies from Britian.
