  • Congress passes Compromise of 1850

    15 states were free and the other 15 were slave states.

  • California Enters In Union

    They entered the Union as a free state. They were a nonslavery state by the Missouri Compromise

  • Formation of the Republican Party

    On this day the Republican Party was created.

  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Created the territories of Kanas and Nebraska, opening new lands for settlement.

  • Bleeding Kanas

    Also called the boarder war. Was a series of violent political confrontations.

  • Congressmen Preston Brooks beats senator Charles Summer

    A member of the House of Representatives entered the senate chamber and beat a senator until he was unconscious

  • Supreme Court ruling in Dred Scott case

    Was a case that intensified national divisions over the issue of slavery. In 1834 Dred Scott a slave had been taken to Illinois a free state, and then Wisconsin territory where the Missouri compromise of 1820 prohibited slavery.

  • Abraham Lincoln vs Stephan Douglas

    Lincoln challenged Douglas to a war of ideas, Douglas accepted it. The debates were held at seven different locations throughout Illinois.

  • John Brown revolt uproar

    John's raid on Harper's Ferry, in attempt to start and armed slave revolt.

  • Abraham Lincoln wins election
