Battle of Verdun

The Germans attacked the town of Verdun in an operation called Gericht. The battle lasted 10 months but the city never fell. The French lost 540,000 and the German lost 430,000 men.

Battle of the Somme

Jul 1, 1916

One of the most bitter and costly battles of the war that started with a main attack on the western front asan attempt to break though German lines at the Somme river. The British lost 58,000 men on the first day. Battle lasted until November 8th.
