Events leading up to the Revolutionary War

  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    This proclamation was set so that the English colonists weren't allowed to settle west of the Appalachian mountains so there were no problems between them. The proclamation was worthless seeing as they didn't obey it.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    This law was put in place to stop smuggling of sugar and molasses by reducing the tax rate. The colonists were angry about the sugar act that 50 letters were sent to the parliament and it was repealed a year later.

    Stamp Act
    This was a tax imposed on all american colonists to pay a tax for every newspaper or printed paper they used. The colonists protested against it and it got repealed.

  • Boston Massacre

    The redcoats arrived in Boston on September 28, 1768. The shot was the "shot heard around the world" and it's still unknown as to who exactly shot first.

    Boston colonists disguised themselves as Indians and threw chests full of tea onto the harbor to protest the British taxes on tea. This put the Intolerable acts in place.

    Intolerable Acts
    Intolerable Acts were laws passed by the British parliament after the Boston tea party. General Thomas Gage forbid town meetings without approval. The colonists voiced their opposition as locals.

    This meeting came together to reconvene the 1st continental congress. it was a meeting between the delegates from the 13 colonies.

    The start of the revolutionary war. Many battles followed after this one, in 1783 the colonists won their independence.

    Written by Thomas Jefferson. It was written to announce and explain why they're separating from Great Britain.

    The turning point in the american revolutionary war. Even though his troops were weakened he strikes again only 18 days after the first battle.
  • Valley Forge

    Valley Forge
    The British had captured the American capital of Philadelphia. Commanded by George Washington. Hundreds died from disease in the cold winter.
  • Battle Of Yorktown

    Battle Of Yorktown
    The final and most important battle in the American Revolutionary War. Washington ordered 5000 troops to block the escape of Cornwallis from Yorktown.
