Events leading to the Revolutionary War

  • The Albany Congress

    -Because of growing tension between the British and the French,the British Government called a meeting of colonial leaders. -It took place in Albany,New York.
    -Ben Franklin drew up a plan called,"The Albany Plan of Union". The Albany congress approved the plan,but the colonial assemblies disproved the plan because the colonies wanted to control their own taxes and their own armies-so the meeting didn't work out, and it was every colony on it's own.

    The French and Indian war

    -The British,The Iroquois,and the colonist. VS. The French, the Algonquin, and the hurons.
    -They where fighting for control over the Ohio river vally -The brittish defeated the french and its allies taking controll of most of the French territory in north America
  • The Treaty of Paris

    -The French and British signed the Treaty of Paris because the French could not defend the rest of it's North American territory the treaty ended the French and Indian War -The British claimed French Canada, and recived Spanish Florida,all French land west of the Mississippi River went to Spain.
    • The Treaty of Paris was signed in the French's Territory what later became part of the British empire

    Pontiac's War

    -Leader of the Ottawa Nation,Pontiac formed an alliance of western Native Americans and fought the British for there land -Nearly half a dozen British forts were destroyed,and at least 2,000 back country settlers were killed. The British were just as viscous back and attacked Native American who didn't even attack them. -It took Place west of the appilacion mountains
  • The Proclimation of 1763

    -The British wanted to avoid any more wars with the Native Americans
    -The British issued the Proclamation of 1763 which banned colonial settlement west of a line drawn along the Appalachian Mountains. The colonists were upset because they had just fought for that land and now it technically wasn't even considered theirs because the couldn't settle on it.
  • The Sugar Act

    -One of the new taxes the British imposed on the colonies, items that were taxed included rum and molasses
    - Because the British were in debt they started imposing new taxes on the colonies to try to get out of that debt
  • The Stamp Act

    • The law that required all colonists to buy special tax stamps for all different sort of activities and items. The colonists responded with protests and boycotts.The law stated that you had to buy a stamp for a document in order for it to be considered "official". items that were taxed included legal documents, licenses, newspapers, other publications, and even playing cards were taxed. -The British were trying to get out of the debt that they had fallen in to during the French and Indian War.
  • The Quartering Act

    -An act that stated that the colonists had to provide food and other supplies for the 10,000 soldiers in the colonies -The British, once again were trying to save money to pull themselves of debt. -Each colony was required to follow the Quartering Act
  • The Boston Massacre

    -A group of angry colonists surrounded a small group of British troops throwing rocks and snowballs at them. The frightened group of soldiers fired into the crowd, killing 5 and wounding 6. -The colonists were upset because the British Parliament continued to tax them on tea. This event took place in Boston,Massachusetts, near Boston Harbor.
  • The Tea Act

    -This act was intended to help the British East India Company,one of Britain's most important company's.
    -The Tea Act actually lowered the price of tea by allowing the East India Company to ship tea directly to the colonies.
    -The colonists reacted, once again with boycotts,seriously hurting the British East India Company.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    -A group of colonists called, The Sons of Liberty, disguised as Native Americans boarded the tea ship. During the next 3 hours the group of colonists threw 342 cases overboard,destroying 90,000 pounds of tea,worth thousands of dollars.
    -This event took place in Boston Harbor, Boston
    -This event happened because colonists were upset about the Tea Act being passed. The Boston Tea Party was the colonists form of boycotting the tea,by doing this they hoped that the act would be repealed.
  • The Intolerable Acts

    -The Intolerable Acts were passed because the British were outraged about the Boston Tea Party and the King called for tough action against the colonies.
    -Parliament passed 4 laws. They are as follows; 1. They Closed Boston Harbor(it was Quarantine) Two other act strengthened the Royal Governor and abolished the upper house of the Massachusetts legislature. and the 4th law strengthened the Quartering Act.
  • First Continental Congress

    • Took place in Philadelphia -The Committee of correspondence organized this meeting because everyone in all the colonies were outraged about the Intolerable Acts.TheFirst Continental Congress was a meeting where each 12/13 colonies sent delegates(Georgia did not) the congress demanded the repeal of the Intolerable Acts.They also declared that the colonies had the right to tax and govern themselve.s Also, declared boycotts of new British goods and decided that each colony was to train a malitia
  • Battles of Lexington and Concord

    -The Governor of Massachusetts found out that the minutemen were storing arms in concord,he sent 700 troops to size the arms and capture colonial leaders.In Lexington,About 77 minute men were waiting for the British.when the British arrived the minutemen refused to go home and that's when the one shot started the revolution.
    -The event took Place in Lexington,Massachusetts
    -The event happened Because the Governor of Massachusetts found out that the minutemen were storing arms in concord.
  • The Second Continental Congress

    -As the crisis with Britain deepened The Second Continental Congress came together in Philadelphia . The Delegates from the colonies included:Thomas Jefferson(Virginia)John Hancock(Boston)and Ben Franklin(Philadelphia)
    -The Second Continental Congress was a meeting that included colonial leaders to discuss the growing tension between the colonies and Britain. They decided that they needed to prepare for war, the first step was to form an army.
    -This event took place in Philadelphia
  • Battle for Fort Ticonderoga

    -Ethan Allen led his force of 83 men to Fort Ticonderoga. By crossing the lake at night and launching a surprise attack in early morning,Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys were successful.
    -The attack was launched to take control of a precious route to Canada and also to seize the British's advanced weapons.
    -The Battle Took Place at Fort Ticonderoga,New York
  • The Battles of Bunker and Breeds Hill

    -The Battle of Bunker and Breeds Hill occurred because both sides wanted the precious land looking over the city of Boston.
    -The British,lead by general William Howe, Launched 3 attacks on the colonists. The first 2 failed but the third time worked,only because the colonists ran out of ammunition.
    -The Battles occurred just outside of the city of Boston.
  • The Olive Branch Petition

    -The Olive Branch Petition was a petition that was sent to the King of England stating that the colonists were loyal to the King and asked King George III to stop all fighting so all disputes between Britain and the colonies could be resolved peacefully.
    -The Second Continental Congress wrote this petition because they wanted all fighting to end peacefully.How ever, the results were not good, King George iii didn't even read the petition but declared that the colonies were in "open rebellion".
  • The Invasion of Quebec

    -The Invasion of Quebec occurred because the colonial army wanted to attack another major British occupied city.
    -The Army's led by Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold attacked the British city of Quebec during a snow storm,however the attack was called off because Montgomery was Killed And Arnold was wounded.
    - The Invasion took place in Quebec,Canada
  • The British Withdrawal from Boston

    -General Washington placed cannons on high-ground overlooking the city. The colonists had a clear shot at the British in the city,and at their ships in Boston Harbor.
    -The British Withdrawal from the colonies because they can no longer defend the city
