  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    The British issue the Proclamation of 1763 after the French and Indian War. This was an effort to reduce costs since the British were in debt following the war. The British prohibited colonists from settling west of the Appalachain Mountains. There fore the British would not have to spend money protecting the colonists from Native Americans. How did the colonists respond? The colonists largely ignored the proclamation and moved west anyways.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    British pass the Stamp Act - which is the first direct tax on the colonists. This stamp was applied to documents such as letters and legal documents. The Stamp Act was an attempt by the British to raise money. Colonial Response: Colonists upset and claim "no taxation without representation". The Sons of Liberty are formed to protest the tax. The colonists organize a boycott of British goods. The Daughtes of Liberty support the boycott by making homespun cloth.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    After repealing the Stamp Act, the British pass the Townshend Acts in 1767. This "indirect" tax got the same response as the direct tax. Colonists renewed their protests and boycotts. In response, the British sent troops to Boston. British troops shoot and kill 5 colonists outside the customs house. Colonial Response: Sam Adams organizes the Committees of Correspondence to promote unity and cooperation among the colonies against the British.

    British pass the Intolerable Acts
    The British pass these laws to punish the city of Boston for the loss of money beacuse of the Boston Tea Party. Colonial resonse: colonists organize the First Continental Congress.
  • Battles of Lexington and Concord

    Battles of Lexington and Concord
    British troops leave Boston to seach for Patriot leaders Sam Adams and John Hancock. After arriving in Lexington, shots were fired between Patriot militia and the British. As the British march back to Boston, Patriots shoot over 200 British soldiers.
