    This act was implementing the idea of popular sovereignty, citizens voting.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision

    The court case in which the Supreme Court decided that slaves living in a free state didn't make that slave "free." This helped the pro-slavery forces.

    The Raid on Harper's Ferry

    The Raid on Harper's Ferry was supposed to ignite a slave uprising in the South. This didn't work, but it did create even more separation between the North and South.

    Election of Abraham Lincoln

    Lincoln opposed the spread of slavery, and also felt that slavery was morally wrong. This made South Carolina succeed from the United States.

    The very first battle in the Civil War. The Confederates took this win, and the North was shocked.

    A turning point in the Civil War where Lee's army is defeated. The Union also regains confidence.

    Abraham Lincoln's speech after the Battle at Gettysburg. This helped people in the North to look ahead and focus on rebuilding America.

    Grant appointed commander of all Union armies

    Lincoln appointed Grant to commander of all the Union troops. This made it possible to win the war for the North.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    Sherman's March to the Sea

    Sherman was a Union officer that was determined to gain control of the Mississippi. This was to destroy the will of the Confederacy and split them in two.
  • John Wilkes Booth

    John Wilkes Booth

    After the war was over, pro-slavery actor John Wilkes Booth murdered Lincoln in the Ford Theater.
  • Thirteenth Amendment Ratified

    Thirteenth Amendment Ratified

    This amendment officially abolished slavery.
