    The Crusades began in 1095 when Pope Urban II gave a plea to reclaim the "Holy Land" from the Muslims. The Frist Crusade was successful in it's goal to reclaim Jerusalem. Later the Muslims vowed to go to war with the Christians in order to reclaim the same area.

    Tenochtitlan was Founded by the Aztecs
    Tenochtitlan was the Aztec Empire's capital, and largest city. it was built on a marshy island in Lake Texcoco. They created causeways to bridge the city to land. This highly sophisticated city also has a dual aquaduct to bring fresh water to the city. Mexico City was built on top of this ancient city after it was conquered by the Spanish.

    The Notre Dame Cathedral was Finished
    The Notre Dame cathedral is one of the best known buildings in Paris. It is a Gothic cathedral built by The Catholic Church to house the Seat of Archdiocese, where all of the French Kings were crowned. The cathedral was vandalized by the protesters of the French revolution beginning in 1789. An extensive restoration project began in 1845 conducted by Violet-de-Duc, a French architect.

    Martin luther was a German Monk who felt the Catholic Church should return to basic beliefs. When they refused to comply Luther was excommunicated. This action led him to create his own branch of Christianity.

    Charles Darwin first visited The Galapagos Island in 1835. Her sailed to the islands on the H.M.S. Beagle. On the islands he studied the unsual iguanas and created the Theory of Evolution.

    The Panama Canal was completed in 1913, however the canal didn't open until 1914. This was a major engineeering marvel that required 10 years to build. many lives were saved by William C. Gorgas who took many measures to prevent disease.

    The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or Soviet Union fell on December 25, 1991. The Union broke up into fifteen republics. The largest and most powerful is Russia. Now the Commonwealth of Independent States includes all of these republics except Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, the Baltic Republics.

    Charlemagne was elected as King of the Franks in 768 C.E by Pope Leo III. The Franks were a Germanic Tribe living in what is now the low countries. He spent most of his reign using warfare to accomplish his goals.
