Lance's Decision to Marry: Intimacy vs. Isolation
At age 23, Lance and Jessica made the decision to marry one another because they knew they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. Because they each had a strong sense of self and a positive self concept, they were able to make the commitment to form a long-term, loving relationship. This is Erikson's 6th Stage of Psychosocial Development. -
Lance Becomes a Father
At age 40, Lance and Jessica have their first child, a son names Maximus. After being in a successful, committed long-term relationship for 17 years, Lance and Jessica both decide they are ready to contribute to the next generation by having their own child and caring for him. This is Erikson's 7th Stage of Psychosocial Development. -
Lance's Final Days: Ego Integrity vs. Despair
Lance spent his final days surrounded by his wife Jessica, their only child Max and their 3 grandchildren. They spent this time reminiscing about life. Lance and his family looked back on his life as a middle school teacher with a great sense of accomplishment. At age 90, he was proud of the fact that through his example, he had inspired Max to also become a teacher. He and his family celebrated life and had no reason to be in despair. This is Erikson's 8th Stage of Psychosocial Development.
