Erikson's Psychological Theories Timeline

  • February 3, 1980

    Josephine, a kindergartner in the United States, started a game of Duck, Duck, Goose at recess and all of the kids had a great time . In Erikson's early childhood stage of initiative versus guilt kids are in the process of figuring out how to plan games in which their peers want to participate. Simultaneously, at this state of early childhood, children are also figuring out how to control their emotions, such that if an activity fails then she or he will not become overly angry and aggressive.
  • April 21, 1988

    Josephine is nearing the end of seventh grade and was on the varsity soccer team. She was named captain for next year and will also be the Associated Student Body President. In Erikson's stage of identity versus isolation adolescents are in the process of forming their identity that helps grow confidence and make friends. During middle school Josephine formed her identity as a leader in her school, enabling her to develop a healthy self-esteem and make strong friendships.

    At 30 years old Josephine and her boyfriend of three years got engaged and plan on getting married the following summer. This reflects Erikson's stage of intimacy versus isolation because Josephine made the decision to stay in a committed relationship, which requires taking risks and opening oneself up to another person in new scary ways. Josephine is now on a life path of companionship and love.
