  • Japanese Army Invades Manchuria

    In 1931, the Japanese Kwangtung Army attacked Chinese troops in Manchuria in an event commonly known as the Manchurian Incident. Essentially, this was an attempt by the Japanese Empire to gain control over the whole province, in order to eventually encompass all of East Asia. This proved to be one of the causes of World War IIs(1).
  • Britain’s Neville Chamberlain and Hitler meet at the Munich Conference

    In September 1938, Neville Chamberlain, the British prime minister, met Adolf Hitler at his home in Berchtesgaden. Hitler threatened to invade Czechoslovakia unless Britain supported Germany's plans to takeover the Sudetenland. After discussing the issue with the Edouard Daladier (France) and Eduard Benes (Czechoslovakia), Chamberlain informed Hitler that his proposals were unacceptable.
  • • General Francisco Franco’s Nationalist forces take control of Madrid (Spain), where he rules until his death in 1975.

    Madrid was held by various forces loyal to the Second Spanish Republic and was besieged by Spanish Nationalist and allied troops under Francisco Franco. The Battle of Madrid in November 1936 was the most concentrated fighting in the city, when the Nationalists made their most determined attempt to take Madrid. The city, besieged from October 1936, eventually fell to the Nationalists on 28 March 1939.
  • • Hitler (Germany) invades Poland, beginning WWII.

    It took Hitler and his Nazis less than a month to over run Poland. He used the newly adopted technique of Blitzkrieg, or lighting war, to acomplish this task. It is a three pronged attack with planes bombing first, followed by tanks and artillary on the ground, and finally ground troops attack.
  • Italy Conqures Ethiopia

    Mussolini wanted to make a new Roman Empire. A Fascist slogan, “The Country Is Nothing Without Conquest.” made everything go into place. In October 1935, Mussolini invaded Ethiopia. The Ethiopians tried to fight back, but the Italian army overpowered the Ethiopian forces.
