    Beginning of French Colonial Era

    French got control of Vietnam and separated it into 3 parts: Tonkin, Annam, and Cochichina.
  • Treaty of Saigon

    Vietnamese Government had to negotiate with the French. Emperor Tu Duc was forced to cede Saigon, the island of Poulo Condor, and three southern provinces.
  • Treaty of Hue

    This treaty, between Vietnam and France, confirmed the first Treaty of Saigon, opened Vietnamese ports, gave missionary freedom, put foreign affairs under France's control, and made Saigon the capital of French Indochina.
  • Second Treaty of Saigon

    Vietnam realizedFrance's control over the southern three provinces they had previously captured, along with opening the Red River and other ports for trade.

    Pacification of Tonkin

    A french political and military campaign orchestrated to regain control of the North portion of Tonkin, through which they ultimately hoped to supress Vietnamese opposition to French rule and regain precedence in the Sino-French War.
  • Vietnam formally know as part of French Indochina.

    1887 was the year in which Vietnam fully and officially became owned by the French. Previous to this date, fragments of Vietnam had already been absorbed. The French reformed education and tried to force Roman Catholicism on the people.
  • Formation of Reformation Society

    A pioneer of Vietnamese nationalism, Phan Boi Chau founded the Reformation Society on the basis of securing Vietnamese sovereignty.
  • Dong Du founded

    Phan Boi Chau founded Dong Du, which is translated into "go East" because he wanted people to......go East. He hoped that if young revolutionaries went to Jap to study, a new era of revolutionaries would be born. Over 100 students participated.
  • Yen Bai Mutiny

    It was an urprising of Vietnamese soldiers who were part of the French Army. They worked with the VNQDD (Vietnamese Nationalist Party) to do this. Their uprising was squandered and lead to many deaths and imprisonments. Because of this, French authoritis decided to relinquish the Vietnamese soldiers in their army and replace them with European, Cambodian, and Lao people.
  • Formation of the Vietminh

    A communist nationa undependence coalition formed to get Vietnam's independence from the French. They received funding from the USSR, US, and China because they were against the Japanese in World War II. By then end of 1944 they had 500,000 members.
  • Phan Boi Chau Expelled

    Japan expelled Phan Boi Chau because he was dubbed an unwelcome person by the French.
