Electronic File Storage- a Brief Chronology

  • First Floppy Disc

The First Floppy Discs are introduced. They are 8" wide, and thought to be small
  • They get smaller

5 1/4" Floppy Discs hit the market. The popularity is immediately explosive, due to reduced size.
  • Shrinking away!

The floppy disc gets a new look and a new smaller size- now just 3 1/2" and in a hard plastic shell, they are not only smaller, but sturdier as well!
  • File Compression Standardized

Compression of TIF, GIF, PDF, Zip, and Postscript files is standardized, allowing for larger files to be compressed and stored on the same disc space.
  • CD-ROM

The CD-ROM hits the market. It is more durable than floppy/ hard shell discs, and has the ability to hold much more data. However, these first CD's are single record only
  • Zip Disk

iomega introduces the "Zip Disk". It stores 25-75 mb of compressed "zipped" data on a each disk- which is more than the 3 1/2" disc can hold by far
  • Smaller storage

Trek Technology and IBM continue the race for smaller portable storage by introducing the 8mb "thumb" drive. Its capacity is roughly 5X what a 3 1/2" floppy can hold
  • Web based Storage Debuts

The 1st Web based EFS, called "Carbonite" launches. It enables subscribers to store their files on a remote web server for immediate access from any computer worldwide without any hardware. Carbonite paves the way for other web-based storage sites, many of which are free.
