People that want to run campaign for their nomination in their party and they fundraise for their campaigns on their quest for the presidency.

The Caucus and Primaries are to narrow the field of those running. In a Caucus people come and listen to speeches and debates and then vote on who they want to run. There are 6 types of Primaries. Open Primaries are primaries where voters cast a ballot and do not have to declare a party affiliation. a closed Primary is one where voters can only vote for those in their party. A semi closed primary allow unaffiliated voters to vote.

A semi open primary doesn't need to declare which party they are voting for publicly. A run-off primaryis when a ballot is not restricted to one party and the top 2 candidates move on. A blanket primary is one where voters can ignore party lines.

At these conventions one candidate from each major party is chosen to run for the presidency by votes. These candidates pick a running mate for vice president. They continue campaigning until the election.

People vote for the candidate they want to run the country for the next four years.

When people vote, they actually vote for electors who go and cast their vote for the candidate they represent, this decides who wins.
