    Seven Years' War

    The seven years' war and its benefits and drawbacks. Benefits: British were now in control of pretty much all of North America and kicked the French out. Drawbacks, this war left them in such a debt they will have to abuse the colonists for money.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    King George III issued a proclamation that forbade colonial settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains. In so doing, he hoped to placate Native Americans who had sided against him during the recently concluded Seven Years' War.
  • Sugar Act

    It was used to raise revenue for the British because of their debt from the 7 years war. If you were an honest man this taxation helped you because it lowered the price of sugar, but if you were smuggling then this was more expensive. Also in order to combat smuggling the government enforced the act at a high magnitude.
  • Stamp Act

    The new tax was imposed on all American colonists and required them to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used. Ship's papers, legal documents, licenses, newspapers, other publications, and even playing cards were taxed.
  • Declaratory Act

    A declaration by the British Parliament that accompanied the repeal of the Stamp Act. It stated that the British Parliament's taxing authority was the same in America as in Great Britain. Parliament had directly taxed the colonies for revenue in the Sugar Act (1764) and the Stamp Act (1765).

    Townshend Acts

    The Townshend Acts were actually a series of taxes and laws imposed upon the colonists. The first, the Townshend Revenue Act, placed a tax on glass, paint, oil, lead, paper, and tea. Other bills included in the Townshend Acts contributed to the colonists' angry reaction.
  • Boston Massacre

    The tensions between the British soldiers and colonists had been high. The Boston massacre occurred when British soldiers opened fire on a group of American colonists killing five men. Prior to the Boston Massacre the British had implemented many taxes for the colonists.
  • Gaspee Affair

    The Gaspee was a British Royal Navy ship assigned to customs duty. The Gaspee was chasing a merchant ship believed to be smuggling goods. To protest the enforcement of laws, led by John Brown, they wounded the lieutenant who was commanding the ship, and set the ship on fire.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party included the colonists dumping tea into the harbor of 3 British ships. The Boston Tea Party took place because the colonists did not want to have to pay taxes on the British tea.
  • Intolerable (Coercive Acts)

    The Intolerable Acts were passed to punish the colonists for the Boston Tea Party. There were three major acts involved that angered the colonists which were quartering act, Boston port act, and Massachusetts government act.

    The colonists could not pay the British in their own money, they had to give them valuable material or British money.

    First Continental Congress

    A meeting of delegates from twelve of the Thirteen Colonies where they discussed the issue of Great Britain using their power. This resulted in a planned boycott of British goods.
