Edward Joseph Ruscha is born to Dorothy and Edward Ruscha in Omaha, Nebraska. He has two older siblings named Paul and Shelby.

After 15 years of living in Omaha, the Ruschas moved to Oklahoma City. Ed started to develop skills as an artist at a very young age. In 1956 he applied and was accepted to Chouinard Art Institute in California. He studied painting, graphic arts, and photography.

While traveling to see family, Ed passed many gas stations. This ended in his first photobook. It was named "Twentysix Gasoline Stations".

Ed married a woman named Danna. Then in 1977 Edward or Eddie was born. They divorced in1972 and Ed had many girlfriends. Then in 1988 he and Danna remarried.

While living in L.A. Ed painted, drew and photographed the changing California lifestyles. Ed very commonly drew or painted the Hollywood sign. "The Back of Hollywood" (1977) was one of the many.

The recession ended and the 1980s art popularity dropped. So Ed's prices dropped and stayed there for a dozen years.
