  • First Kindergarten is opened

    First Kindergarten is opened
    Opened in Watertown, WI by Margarethe Meyer Shurz, she was a follower of Frobel while in Germany. She came to America with her husband and after establishing their home, longed for something more purposful to do with her life. She established a small kindergarten class that is believed to be the first in America's history.
  • The Morrill Act

    The Morrill Act
    The Morrill Act was established to allow for states to sell portions of land as well as keep some land on which to build colleges. Those schools would focus on teaching agricutlural and mechanical information as well as military tactics.
  • Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka Kansas

    The U.S. Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional for states laws to support "seperate but equal" education. The desegragation of public schools was a significant stride in the educational opportunities available to all students as well as the civil rights movement.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    President Johnson established the ESEA as part of his "war on poverty." It was his hope that the Elementary and Secondary Education Act would help close the gap between low-income students and those with more financial security but focusing on reading, math, and writing.
  • No Child Left Behing Act Signed

    No Child Left Behing Act Signed
    SIgned by President Bush, it was the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
