1944 (Butler's) Education Act
This act was introduced as an attempt to create the structure for the post-war British Education. The Act introduced free compulsory secondary education to 15 years of age in three different types of school. These were Grammer, Secondary Modern and Technical. -
1960 Report of the Beloe Committee to the Secondary Schools Examination Council
This report recommended the establishment of the Certificate of Secondary Education (CSE). -
1973 School age raised to 16
Leaving School age raised to 16 years of age and made compulsory. -
1973 Education Act (Work Experience)
Work Experience was made compulsory for children in their last year under the school leaving age. -
1975 Sex Discrimination Act
This Act changed society by bringing equal opportunities to women. Illegal to discriminate. -
1976 Education Act
In effect made the academically selective independent school places by local authorities unlawful. -
1976 Race Relations Act
This act was revolutionary within society as no longer could you discriminate against anyone on the grounds of race. It was illegal to do so. -
Waddell Report
The Waddell Report School Examinations recommended a single exam at age 16 to replace the GCE and CSE. The GCSE was Introduced at a later date. -

GCSEs introduced
GCSE stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education. The first GCSE courses began in 1986, and the first examinations were taken in 1988. This replaced the previous O Level and CSE systems by merging them together. -

1988 Education Reform Act
The 1988 Act provided for a 'basic curriculum' to be taught in all maintained schools. The purpose of the National Curriculum was to standardise the content taught across schools. The Act also introduced Key Stages setting the educational knowledge expected of students at various ages. -
National Curriculum for Secondary Schools
This was introduced as a set of subjects for which there were programmes of study and attainment targets. -
SATs Introduced
SATs were first administered in 1991 after being introduced in 1989. SATs. This was an exam that was introduced to test students at ages seven, eleven and fourteen. -
OFSTED
The establishment of OFSTED (Office for Standards in Education) to monitor and report on quality in schools. This included not only individual school inspections but also research into wider issues such as equality, teaching and learning in specific subjects. -

Year 10 Reading Tutor and Mentor
I was a reading tutor and a Mentor at my secondary school. The reading club took place during lunchtimes and this involved helping the year 7 students to improve their reading skills. The mentor role was to help students from yr 7 to yr 9 with any problems they may be having within school, lessons or out of school. -
Yr11 Prefect
This role involved supervision of all year students from year 7 to year 10 at break time and lunchtimes. -

2001 Special Educational Needs and Disability Act
This act was introduced to make further provisions against discrimination, on grounds of disability in schools and other educational establishments. -

2003 Every Child Matters
In 2003, the governement published a green paper called 'Every child matters'. This was aimed at transforming children's services. This was published following the death of Victoria Climbe. Soon after, the Childrens Act 2004 was also passed. -

PLTS Introduced
Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) are essential skills for work and general learning. The PLTS framework comprises six groups of skills that, together with the Functional Skills of English, mathematics and ICT will prepare learners to confidently enter work and adult life as confident and capable individuals. -
2010 Equality Act
The act replaced all previous equality legislation such as the Race Relations Act, Disability Discrimination Act and Sex Discrimination Act. -
2010 White Paper: The Impotance of Teaching
2010 white paper outlines how the status of the teaching profession will be raised and the quality of initial training and continuing professional development will be transformed. And it commits Government to cutting away unnecessary duties, processes, guidance and requirements. -
2011 Education Act
This Act takes forward the importance of teaching and measures from legislative proposals in the schools white paper, the department for business, innovation and skills including two elements of the reforms to higher education funding. -
