  • Fishers Education Act (1918)

    transferred cost of education to central government, good for teachers pay and conditions, marks first stage of centralisation process. Raised school leaving age to 14 although this was often ignored
  • Haddow Committee (1926)

    recommended the creation of primary and secondary schools and the extension of compulsory schooling until 5. Recommendations were not implemented due to cost
  • only 13% over age of 13 were in school

  • Beveridge Report

    identified ignorance (education) as a major problem
  • Butler Act (1944)

    extended and enforced leaving age to 15
    advocated tripartite system of post 11 education - grammar, technical and secondary moderns schools
