    'Thoughts and Language' was a book written by Leo Vygotskyk which was intrduced to the English speaking world.
    Lev Vygotsky was a Russian psychologist whose work focused on child development as well as the connections between language development, social learning, and cognition. This book was first publised in 1934 and addresses different ideas in regards to language acquisition and how it shapes a child’s growing cognitive capabilities.

    'The Open Classroom' by Herbert R. Kohl helps promote open education.
    Kohl used this book to help promote open education which was an approach that emphasized a centered classroom. It included an active and holistic learning environment. Kohl wrote this book as an attempt to revolutionize the schools and teaching styles during his time.Introducing new concepts that were in contrast with the styles of education that existed during that period. Much of what he suggested has since been incorporated and is still being incorporated, into the educational system.

    Jean Piaget produced insight which he gained from experiments with children, expanded into educational science which then encouraged the best development of intelligence and socialization in children. His Learning Cycle model helps to popularize discovery-based teaching approaches, particularly in the sciences.

    The Equal Opportunities Act was passed.
    This act is a federal law that prohibits discrimination against faculty, staff, and students. This includes racial segregation of any students and requires the school districts to take necessary actions to overcome any barriers to students’ equal participation. The legislation has also been particularly important in regards to protecting the rights of students with limited English proficiency.

    In the aftermath of the Vietnam War, the need for a change in American policy concerning refugees became very apparent. This act was signed into law by President Carter. Alongside the immigration act of 1965, it reforms immigration laws to admit any refugees for humanitarian reasons. This also included special needs children. The act was built on an existing partnership that helped every refugee settle and adjust to their life in a new country.

    National Board of Professional Teaching Standards is formed.
    This is a non profit organization in the United States that is dedicated to promoting high levels of excellence in education. The board improves teaching and student learning by enhancing overall educator effectiveness and recognizing highly accomplished educators that meet those high standards. This helps define what teachers should know and be able to do, offering assessments to see that certified teachers are meeting those standards which are based on the "Five Core Propositions"

    Teach for America was founded by Wendy Kopp. It is a nonprofit organization that recruits and selects college graduates from top universities to serve as teachers. These members are known as "corps members" and are committed to teaching for at least two years in a public or public charter schools in one of the 52 lower income communities that the organization serve.

    The illegal immigration reform and responsibility act was enacted to prevent the flow of undocumented aliens into the US. President Bill Clinton signed the Illegal Immigrant Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act into law in 1996. This act prohibits states from offering in-state tuition to documented immigrants unless the benefit is available to any U.S citizen or national. This law however conflicts with different practices and laws that are set in place in several states in the U.S.

     American Association on Mental Retardation (AAMR) became the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
    The American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities was founded in 1976 by Edouard Sequin, M.D.It has refined and modified ID diagnostic criteria since 1921 and are based on new research and changes in clinical practices. AAIDD uses limitation I intellectual functioning referring to mental abilities, and it also labels adaptive functioning as adaptive behavior. Standardized tests also determine limitations. AAIDD is an organization that is devoted to intellectual disability.
  • American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009

    American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
    The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 was signed into law by President Obama. The administration stated that this act will jump start our economy, saving jobs and addressing challenges to that our country can thrive in the 21st century. This act provides more than 90 billion dollars for education which goes to local school districts preventing layoffs and repairs. This also includes an over 4-billion-dollar program that is designed to induce reform in the k-12 education.
