Eastern Europe after the end of the Cold War (specifically East Germany)

  • Period: to

    Potsdam Conference

Stalin of the USSR, Truman of the USA, and Atlee of the UK promptly agreed to punish Germany with strict terms. This included the division of the country into four different zones, which is a form of territoriality because they are assuming control of the place.
  • Period: to

    Berlin Blockade

The USSR wanted to punish East Germany for getting help from the West. As a result, they formed a choke point on the country, which prevented them from receiving much needed resources for its economy and wellbeing of the citizens.
  • Creation of East Germany

    Creation of East Germany
What was originally a zone that was controlled by the USSR, becomes a satellite state. This term is an example of an autonomous region, as it is formally independent buts its economy, military, and even politics are controlled by the USSR.
  • Hungary removes its border fence

This may seem minor, but had Hungary not did this action, it would not have resulted in thousands of East Germans immigrating to Hungary to then immigrate or declare asylum to West Germany.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
This event happened just a mere two years after President Ronald Reagan gave his riveting speech to Mikhail Gorbachev of the USSR to tear down the Berlin Wall. Thus, this was the precursor to the fall of the Iron Curtain.
  • Period: to

Treaty on the Final Settlement with Respect to Germany

This was signed by Mikhail Gorbachev who supported Glasnost, meaning the Soviet Socialist republics would later declare sovereignty from Russia. In this treaty, with the developments of Die Wende, the Peaceful Revolution, and 03/18/1990 election in East Germany, both halves of Germany were finally ready to reconcile. On 08/31/1990, both West and East Germany agreed to a unification agreement, reunification was now imminent.
  • Reunification of Germany

    Reunification of Germany
After thousands of East Germans immigrated to Czechoslovakia or Austria to then enter West Germany. This later resulted in the self-determination of East Germany to unite with West Germany so that they can finally prosper again.
