  • Japan: Russian and British Ships off Japan Coast

    Russian and British ships were spotted off the Japanese coast. This scared Japanese lords and began to form their own local armies on the coast. This is the first example of imperialism coming to Japan.

    The first Opium War happened after the Chinese refused to let the British continue to import the drug opium, and confiscated most of the drug and cut the British off. The british responeded by attacking china with their military might. This is improtant because this is the first chinese conflict with the europeans.

    The Treaty of Nanking marked the end of the first opium war, and was seen as an unfair truce. The British opened up 5 new ports, and left room for another war to ensue. This created the westernization of China.

    The Taiping Rebellion marked the first major rebellion in east asia. They aimed to create social reforms, more womens rights, and bring Christianity as the main religion in Qing China. This was eventually shut down by the Qing, but with help from the British and French. This is important because it shows rebellion and westernization in Asia.

    The Second Opium war was caused when the british and the french wanted to open all trade in china and legalize opium trade. The Qing government rejected the idea and the europeans attacked again. This shows the continuity of the europeans pushing the Chinese around.

    The Meiji restorarion ended the Tokugawa Shogunate and brought back Imperial Japan. This is important because it was the beggining of Japan's Imperial ways.

    Korea is forced to sign the treaty of Gangwha Island facing the Japanese Empire who is attempting to keep up with European powers by following the imperialistic trend. This is important because it shows how Japan was imperialistic.

    This was also known as the Meiji Constitution. It was modeled after the Prussian and British constitutions, with an emporer and a cabinet with a prime minister and so forth. This shows how despite Japan resisting direct westernization, were still influenced by it.

    The Sino-Japanese War was fought between China and Japan over Korea itself. Japan quickly defeated the Chinese. This is important because it made the Euroepans realize that Japan wasn't a joke, and was becoming one of their biggest competitors.

    The Chinese people had become tired of the europeans controlling their lives so they rose up to restore Chinese purity. They were easily taken down by the combination of the Qing and the european powers. This shows how the chinese felt about imperialists in their land.
