Earth's Timeline

  • 136 BCE

    Formation of Milky Way

13.6 billion years ago, after the big bang, gasses started clustering into groups of stars, and these started attracting towards each other gravitationally to form different galaxies
  • 46 BCE

    Planetary Accretion

4.6 billion years ago, some particle began accumulating into a larger object (earth) because of gravity
  • Period: 46 BCE to 44 BCE

    Formation of the Moon

4.5 billion years ago, a Mars-sized planet and earth collided, and some of the leftover debris came together to form the moon
  • Period: 45 BCE to 40 BCE

    Planetary Cooling

4.5 to 4 billion years ago, the heat inside of earth slowly cooled down after time went on, which is known as planetary cooling
  • 38 BCE

    End of Heavy Bombardment

4 to 3.8 billion years ago, a lot of comets and asteroids were crashing into earth, and this was known as the "late heavy bombardment"
  • Period: 15 BCE to 10 BCE

    Core Formation

1.5 to 1 billion years ago, the molten iron in the middle of the earth cooled down and became the core.
