Approximately 10pm. On his deathbed he had this to say of his passing “I die hard but I am not afraid to go.” His last words to his beloved wife Martha were “’tis well”. On December 18th 1799 a funeral was held at Mount Vernon where his body is buried. Much talk was held about moving his body to the capitol and placing it in a marble monument. But this never eventuated due to strong opposition from the South. Instead a tomb was constructed at Mount Vernon where his remain.
