    The Dutch East Indies was a political unit whch was made up of over 2,000 islands. The capital of The Dutch East Indies was Batavia. The islands that the Dutch East Indies were made up of made up the Spice Islands

    The Dutch also annexed the northern coast of Java and the Island of Madura. The reason that the Dutch wanted control over the Spice Islands was because when one has control of the Spice Islands he/she has control over the trade in that area, which was very prosperous. Gaining control over the northern coast of Java and the Island of Madura gave the Dutch control over almost all of the Spice Islands with the exceptions of certian areas which remained under the rule of their rulers.

    The Dutch East Indies company went bankrupt in 1770 because the money wasn't distributed efficiently. There was too much money going out to the employees and it left the actual company with almost nothing. The company couldn't collect from taxes because they used a sphere of influence type of imperialism.
