    DNA timeline

  • Friedrich Miesher

    Friedrich Miesher
Made the dicorvery of what he called "nuclein". What he actually found was DNA. He made the dicovery by seperating the blood from the DNA(by placing the blood in a salt and alkaline solution) which he obtained from bandages he found at a local hospital.
  • Gregor Mendel

    Gregor Mendel
Known as the father of modern genetics. He discovered hereditary traits in the pea plants he was studying and proved that certain treaits can be passed on from parent to child
  • Thomas Hunt Morgan

    Thomas Hunt Morgan
Made the dicovery of sex limited inheritance where a trait can only be present in the offsring if certain conditions are met. In the fruit fies he was studying it was the fact that white eyes appeared to only be carried down by the X chomosome that led him to this discovery
  • Oswald Avery

    Oswald Avery
Tested different strains of bacteria and after heating an infectious strain, he realized that the denaturing caused from the heating caused the virus to stop being infectious. But when injected alongside the harmless rough strand it reverted back to being fatal for the rats. This proved that having a vehicle for it to transform back into its original form would undo what the heating had caused. This was known as the transforming factor.
  • Erwin Chargaff

    Erwin Chargaff
Since there are similar amount of adenine and thymine or Guanine and Cytosine he hypothesized that they must be arranged in a certain order so that ratio in all living things are the same
  • George Beedle and Edward Tatum

    George Beedle and Edward Tatum
Beadle and Tatum discovered that genes controlled the production of enzymes need for metabolic processes. Mutations within these genes could cause the enzymes to not be produced at all. But if the end product of the enzyme was used as a substitute then the mutation could be accounted for. This is known as the one gene one enzyme theory. They won the Nobel prize in 1958 for their work.
  • Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase

    Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase
They proved that genetic material that infects bacteria during an attack by a virus is actually DNA not a protein. They tested this using phage T2 a virus that infects e.coli. This experiment proved their hypothesis about the DNA of viruses.
  • Rosalind Franklin

    Rosalind Franklin
An x ray crystallographer who discovered the 3-D structure of DNA
  • James Watson and Francis Crick

    James Watson and Francis Crick
Published the first accurate model of DNA (the double helix model) Including how the four basic proteins were arranged and connected. They own a Nobel prize for their efforts in 1962
