  • Meselson and Stahl

    Meselson and Stahl
Proved that DNA replication was semi-conservative, meaning that both strands of DNA were used to synthesize a new DNA molecule, or one DNA molecule per strand. This is called semiconservative replication. They found this out by observing e coli with different concentrations of nitrogen (15N and 14N) in their DNA. When these e coli replicated, the resulting DNA strands consisted of equal parts 15N and 14N, which supported the semiconservative replication hypothesis.
