DNA

  • Father of Modern Genetics

Deduced genes come in pairs and are inheritedas distinct units by working with peas although he originially called these genes particles. By 1900 nasic structure of DNA was known including that there were only 4 bases.
  • Pneumonia experiment

Oswald Avery, Colin MacLeod, and Maclyn McCarthy destroyed different types of molecules to see if it caused an inherited change in bacteria called transformation by injecting mice with S and R pnemoucucuss bacteria to see if they would get infected. If the bacteria's DNA was destroyed no transformation occured. But if the heat destroyed Virulent form was added with the non Virulent form the mice would be infected and die.
  • Erwin Chargaff

analysed DNA from a wide range of species he learned about the realtionships between combinations of bases
  • Rosalind Franklin

Obtained high quality pictures of DNA molecule which lead to the discovery that DNA was a double helix.
  • Linus Pauling

Suggested DNA was a triple helix however did show polypeptide chains are often held in the shape of an alpha helix by H bond which could be broken down by moderate heating.
  • Cambridge James Watson and Francis Crick

Using results from Rosalind Franklin's research they managed to confirm their hypothesis without doing any experiments. They foudn out that the bases always paired together as adenine- thymine and cytosine guanine.
