Introducing and Implementing a Makerspace Program to BUSD Elementary School

    Staff Meeting: Introducing Maker Movement
    Administrators introduce Maker Movement to school site. An introduction presentation is shared out. Handouts spotlighting maker educational programs are past out for review and discussion. A list of makerspace websites are shared with staff for further viewing. A makerspace leadership committee sign up sheet is past out. There is a two week open window to sign up.

    Administrator meet with potential Leadership Members
    Administrator meets with specific staff members individually or in a small group to spark interest in becoming involved. These hand picked staff members show a quality of the leadership, enthusiasm, and/or knowledge base.
  • Creation of Makerspace Leadership Committee

    Creation of Makerspace Leadership Committee
    New Leadership Committee, including administrator, meet for the first time. Committee explores makerspace schools/communities via websites, social media, etc.. Committee discuss goal setting, funding sources (i.e. writing grants, PTA funds, etc.), donation sources (i.e. asking district office IT department for old electronic, asking parents for materials), potential areas to house the makerspace.

    Makerspace School Site Donation Drive
    Students are asked to donate items from home like old or unused toy cars, legos, balloons, electrical toys, old telephone cords, old cable cords, electrical wire, copper tape, etc.
  • Donation Drive Administrator Contribution

    Administrator begins with grant writing for future funding. Requests go out to the district IT department and other school sites for donation of old/unused electrical wire, cables, electrical devices, etc. Administrator discuss allocating school site funding with school site council for review and vote.

    Committee reviews donations, discuss area for the makerspace, favorite workshop ideas, makerspace community resources and websites.

    A pre-set makerspace schedule, developed by Administrator, will be shared with teachers as to when students have access to create in the makerspace area.

    Makerspace leadership committee review the makerspace area, material, creations, and overall use. Students are surveyed on overall space and function of area.

    Makerspace area is officially open the school site for the new school year. Students are invited to create on their own or problem solve a design challenge.

    The 2019-2020 makerspace calendar is shared with staff for scheduled classroom sign ups. Teachers can request additional support by makerspace leadership committee for further assistance.
